However, did you know that your diet plays a larger role in your dental health than you might think? It is now believed that specific nutrients in food may also help positively impact your teeth. A few of those nutrients are vitamin D, protein and omega-3s, all of which are naturally found in some of your favorite seafoods. Let’s take a closer look at how each of these nutrients plays a role in our dental health.
- Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and for keeping teeth strong. Seafood, like salmon, canned tuna, trout and mackerel, are natural sources of vitamin D, which makes them solid choices to add to your diet. Vitamin D may also help boost the regeneration of tooth enamel.
- Protein from fish and shellfish helps improve dental health by strengthening the tooth structure. The amino acid arginine, which is found in all seafood, helps to alter the actual pH balance in your mouth, which may reduce the risk of cavities.
- Omega-3s may also help keep teeth strong by improving the health of the mouth’s connective tissue and regulating inflammation.
