Hi, Seafoodies!
During National Pescatarian Month, we’ve been sharing the most helpful lessons we’ve learned in our many years of seafoodin’. Let’s wrap up the month by answering some frequently asked questions about the Dish on Fish: Who are we? Foodies with a love for all things from the sea. What do we offer? Tasty seafood recipes and nutrition tips. Where and when? Your home kitchen, in less time than you might think! How can we help? Tips for meal planning, meal prep, time-saving tools and a one-stop-shop for inspiring recipes.
There’s one question that deserves a more detailed response, and that’s why. Specifically, why are we spreading awareness about the pescatarian diet? Let’s consider some of the reasons why a growing number of Americans are embracing this lifestyle:
- It’s healthy! Swapping meat for seafood helps lower your saturated fat intake, aids in weight management and has been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. And health experts say that going pescatarian gives you the omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals you need to stay in tip-top shape. Even some omnivores are seeing the benefits of reducing meat consumption and eating a semi-pescatarian diet.
- It’s versatile! Seafood is a snap to fit into just about any dish — from breakfast frittatas to dinner fajitas — and can be enjoyed at any time of day. And if you want variety, remember, there are plenty of fish in the sea: salmon, shrimp, tilapia, scallops, white fish and more. Pescatarians are never bored!
- It’s delicious! When you #GoPescatarian, you never have to sacrifice great taste. Seafood is succulent and craveable, whether you’re whipping up a lip-smacking, on-the-go snack or setting a sophisticated table for dinner guests. With seafood as the centerpiece of your meal, incredible flavor is always on the menu!
- It’s easy! Let’s dispel the rumor that seafood can be difficult to cook: Not true! Fresh or frozen seafood needs just a few minutes of cooking time and some seasoning. Pouched and canned seafood is pre-cooked, so it’s easy to add to dishes on the fly. Many pescatarians find their cooking lives are less complicated (and more fun) than when they were omnivores.
- It’s satisfying! Lightening up on the saturated fat doesn’t mean going hungry. Seafood is a rich source of protein, making you feel satisfied longer and giving you an abundance of energy to power through the day. If you’re not a pescatarian yet, you may be surprised how filling (and fueling) a seafood meal can be!
With all the benefits the pescatarian diet offers, we’ve got just one question left: What are you waiting for? There’s still plenty of time to take our challenge and #GoPescatarian!
