Happy #SeafoodSunday, Seafoodies!
It is THE season for salads. And we just looooove a good Caesar salad, especially a lightened-up one that features scrumptious seafood! With summer heat right around the corner, we’re on the hunt for lighter recipes. So, we thought it was time to share some new ideas for these cool, creamy and refreshing salads. Topped with seafood, Caesar salads are perfect any time you’re craving a satisfying, warm-weather meal.
With so many food trends coming and going, the Caesar salad has shown some serious staying power. Talk about a classic! The famous dish supposedly dates back to 1924, when restaurateur Caesar Cardini was low on supplies and had to make do with ingredients he had on hand. (And this, Seafoodies, illustrates why it’s always good to have shelf-stable seafood in your pantry!) The rest, as they say, is history.
The Caesar salad has been deconstructed and reconstructed over the years, and raw eggs have given way to mayonnaise and other substitutes, but the overall Caesar spirit is still going strong. While the recipes vary wildly, they tend to have one thing in common: anchovies! These small fish add a rich, umami flavor to any dish, with plenty of healthy fats to boot. We also love how this salad can become a main dish when you add some fresh seafood. Upgrading your Caesar with some shrimp or salmon is an easy way to up the protein power in your salad and work towards the 2 to 3 servings of seafood a week recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Here are some of our favorite seafood Caesar recipes—for an added nutritional boost, try switching in kale for traditional romaine. And don’t miss the superfood anchovy-caesar dressing you will reach for again and again!
