Oh, Man! Seafood Meals That Boost Men’s Health

Hey, Seafoodies!

In June we celebrate Dads and grads, of course. But it’s also Men’s Health Month, which is all about encouraging the men in your life to take good care of themselves. So, let’s talk about the nutritional benefits of seafood, and how consuming a little more shrimp, salmon (and yes, lobster!) can help men live longer, healthier lives.

We all know that seafood tastes great and is a snap to prepare. But it also provides essential nutrients that men need to thrive. Here are just a few of the healthy reasons men should put seafood on their plate more often.

  • Protein power. To maintain muscle mass and keep up energy levels, men need anywhere from 55 to 75 grams of protein in their daily diets. Seafood can help meet these requirements, and then some, without all of the saturated fat of some other proteins. Take tuna, for example: A 3-ounce serving has a whopping 25 grams of protein!
  • O-mazing omega-3s. Hormonal changes in their 40s put many men at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Seafood is the premier source of essential omega-3 fatty acids, which help protect the heart—as well as the brain, hair and skin! Fatty or oily fish like salmon contain the highest levels of omega-3s, so men should aim to eat them at least 2 times each week.
  • Vital vitamins. Seafood options such as salmon, trout and tuna are rich in vitamin D, a muscle-mover and immunity-booster that we all need more of as we age. These fish also are an excellent source of vitamin A, which can protect prostate health, and vitamin B-12, which helps improve sleep and memory.
  • Must-have minerals. Potassium, magnesium and zinc help men stay active, boost stamina and increase testosterone levels. Men can load up on these important nutrients by eating some salmon, clams and oysters!
